What is Hippotherapy?
- An evidenced based therapeutic approach that uses horseback riding to promote physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. At A.S.K. Therapy Services, we will use Hippotherapy if it best meets the needs of our client as determined during initial assessment.
- Hippotherapy is different from recreational horseback riding in that it is conducted by licensed therapists—such as physical, occupational, and/or speech therapists—who incorporate the unique movements of the horse into treatment plans. As with each instrument used to achieve outcomes, a skilled therapist observes reactions to stimuli and dynamically changes input to obtain desired results.
- The rhythmic and repetitive motion of the horse is unmatched in the benefits that it provides. Many body systems are engaged while riding; muscular, skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, nervous, which improves attention and learning while improving muscle tone, balance, coordination, and posture.
- Hippotherapy can also enhance emotional and social skills, as interacting with horses often fosters a sense of trust and connection. It is commonly used for individuals with conditions like cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, and various neurological impairments. Overall, hippotherapy offers a holistic approach that combines physical rehabilitation with the therapeutic benefits of interacting with animals
